    Back in the saddle

Got my 1965 Scout model 80 running again.  Got a brand new clutch from Hank and a little help from some friends I was able to get it running.  Updated plates and insurance, put 20 miles on it last night.  Couple little bugs I've got to work out then it'll be all set.  I'll start packing it for Brush Run Races in Crandon for this weekend.  Even put on the chrome rims for some bling.  Gotta find my mirror dice....

TravelSince Jen will be going with you will you now retire your former inflatable driving companion?  Beer  It appears we should prepare for some Storm or even Lightningso I will be packing my Umbrella in the Automobile.  I'd prefer to have Paradise but likely we will need a Travel to find some sun.  Hopefully it's not to bad.

Congrates Nate! I'm thinking of going this weekend. It'll be my first time there. Any suggestions or tips for a newbie?

Going to Crandon for the first time?  N8 (Tater) is a MASTER.  PM him for the phone number to N8's Scout City Tour Service.  He does Dunes Tours too!  I'll send you my number also.  Get up there, call us and be prepared to have a great time!

    Samule-

My phone number is 1-920-379-5147.  I'll be up there early Friday morning.  Look for me under my red and blue circus tent in spectator camping.  You can't miss us.  We have a pretty good crew this year.  You're welcome to camp with us.  Races are all day Sat and Sunday.  Truck races at Crandon can't be beat.

    Re: Back in the saddle

We done blew it up!  Carnage so far: Crankshaft, all pistons, all connecting rods, camshaft, cam bearings, oil cooler system.  Basically the entire rotating assembly decided it was done and started to leave.  Jimmy (driver/owner) shut it down ASAP.  Only one rod was allowed to leave the motor and it left quite hastily leaving two large holes in the oil pan.

Fortunately N8 (The King of Crandon) Kussman came to the rescue.  We drove to Lakewood to the home of MonkeyParts plasma cutting and widgets.  We got a late 70's 350 that was sitting for a couple years in his back yard up against the trees with a 78 Ford truck hood over it. We loaded it by hand and headed back to the track.  By the time we got back the original race engine was torn down quite a bit and assessed as nearly terminal.  We cleaned up the used engine, removed all the stuff we didn't need and proceeded to rebuild an engine using the tailgate of a pickup and a garbage can as a work shop.  Bottom line is we built and installed a motor and prepped the truck. Led almost the entire Sunday race and ended up 2nd.  This team is awesome and we had a blast doing it.  We gave Jimmy a hot rod and asked him to put it out front but don't hurt it.  The dude can drive and he got the job done!

Tim Moeller, Sunday's winner, would not have even been running had I not ran to Rhinelander to get him a fuel pump Sunday morning.

    Re: Back in the saddle

This weekend at Crandon was a blast.  Truck count was down a little, good crowd of fans.  Glad I know a bunch of folks in the northern zone, who have spare motors.  When Hank called me on my cell, I called Eric in Lakewood.  He left work briefly to meet us at his house.  With no engine hoist, Eric, Dan, my girlfriend and myself hand loaded a fully dressed 350 Chevy into the back of the truck after dragging the motor out of the woods.  Hats off to The Team Ridderbush crew who worked feverishly all night to get the motor running.  Jimmy actually led about 8 laps, getting passed with 1.25 laps to go.  Jay and Cheyne the announcers mentioned Team Ridderbush numerous times over the PA system.  Surely was one awesome race.  Hats off to Eric Linsen of Monkeyparts for providing a motor.  Jimmy is still in the year end points chase.  If there's a will there's a way!

Originally I wasn't going to erect the circus tent but last year spring run was hot.  I figured that it would either rain or be hot.  It ended up being both.  Couple patches need to be made as the mice got into it again.  We ended up having 12 camp spots ~50 people.  Many folks helping make easy set-up and takedown.

Now for some tech.  10 days ago replaced the clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout and pilot bearing.  Drove it 20 miles first day.  Next day drove it a little bit, blew flexible slave hose.  Put on a spare.  Drive to Crandon.  Leaving Crandon Sunday, blew master cylinder.  It geysered fluid inside the cab into my leg with great force.  Slightly irritated, I limped it to Matt's house.  Checked out a nearby parts Scout.  We planned on staying the night.  Monday morning worked on it.  I ended up dismantling the emergency brake cable, welding two small brackets and fabbing a manual hand lever clutch to accuate the throwout bearing lever.  It worked like a charm all the way home.  Little tricky as I could've used another hand to shift my non-syncro first gear, manual steering and clutch all while drinking my Monster energy drink.

Working E-brake lever will be re-attached as this was a temporary roadside fix.

I am disappointed that there is no mention of duct tape, chewing gum, ratchet straps or roadside flares in this story.

Reminds me of a song that needed rain, momma, pick up truck, getting drunk, trains and prison to be the perfect Country song.

At least no body got runned over by a darned old train.

Sounds like some of your finest work Mr. N8.  What did you use for a whoop a%# spring to return the clutch lever/park brake handle?

    Re: Back in the saddle

Since the clutch pedal wasn't hooked up anymore, I robbed the under dash clutch return spring and hooked it to the throwout fork and crossmember.  There was also a 24 inch bungee cord attached as well.  Worked like a charm.
