    Have you ever noticed

How the internet has dumbed people down?  I cruise several Jeep related forums, and I can't believe how many people would rather fire up the computer than actually crawl under their vehicle and figure stuff out themselves.  One person talked about his transmission slipping and asked if anyone had any ideas on why it's doing that, but never checked the trans fluid level.  Another had his jeep hit from the passenger's side right at the axle and now the axle is shifted over to the driver's side, but he didn't check to see if anything was bent, he just asked if anyone knew what could be the problem.

Another guy drives his Jeep 35 miles on the highway in 4wd part time and wonders why there are noises coming from the transfer case.

Is there an electricity forum somewhere?  I turn on a switch and one light doesn't come on, does anyone have any ideas what possibly could be the problem?  Confused

Oh, I agree.  But in a sort of technical environment like an OHV forum, and when people have THOUSANDS of posts, they should have a bit of a clue.

I think that many are just buying the truck and have never built one , let alone turn a wrench on them .

    Re: Have you ever noticed

Old Post, but a relevant one.

It's not just a truck thing. There is this fellow on a different Jeep related Forum who keeps asking work related IT questions on the Forum. Instead of researching the answer, he asks his available pool of brains. Expedient, yes, but does his knowledge increase for asking and receiving the answer for free?

It seems to me that when this who Internet thing caught on, people with experience shared ideas to get everyone on the same page and increase the knowledge of the group. With peoples natural tendency of people to answer just about any question, and the increasing dependency of people to rely on Technology to solve their problems, people repeatedly ask the same questions over and over. The energy of the groups is spent answering these same questions and no one can move forward. Many younger users have gotten so lazy that they will not use proper English anymore. Their excuse is "this is the internet not school".

How do you fight this trend? If the poster has make alphabet soup out of his post, I ask for an English translation :D I also tend to overlook questions which the answer is in a Repair Manual or obvious if you look at the machine. That said, I do understand that the economy is forcing those who would not normally attempt a repair to try it themselves. There are also the kids who now have their first vehicle, and want to learn something (Hurray for them!!). If they have included that in their post, I am more likely to give a more detailed answer.
